A chit's yearly list of nonsense

Rain washes megrims away

There have been a slew of thunderstorms in the past few weeks here in Massachusetts and I find it invigorating yet at the same time calming. One of the things I’ve missed the most about South Florida is its tropical, moody weather.

The sunny rain showers with warm and fat rain drops and the volatile light shows have been but misty memories. Lately, however, storms with hail and large ominous storm clouds have become more than just a one bit wonder here in New England. Whether it is a fluke of the season or a sign of a more permanent change in the Earth’s climate it can be the perfect opportunity to take a break from an overscheduled life.

Things I love to do in the rain

Lean out the windows to watch the rumbling clouds
Turn off the lights and take a nap with the pitter-patter a natural soundtrack
When power cuts out it’s the perfect time to catch up on chores or hobbies that don’t include electricity
It it also perfect background for scary stories though not everyone listening may find it calming

WHAT ABOUT YOU?

Do you find rain storms exhilarating or irritating?  Here’s the opening of a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Rain in Summer

How beautiful is the rain!
After the dust and heat,
In the broad and fiery street,
In the narrow lane,
How beautiful is the rain!

How it clatters along the roofs,
Like the tramp of hoofs
How it gushes and struggles out
From the throat of the overflowing spout!

  1. I love the sound of rain, even mild thunderstorms are relaxing to me. But now son is terrified of thunder storms and gets very nervous. I am trying to show him the rain and thunder are calming to listen to.

  2. I love the rain. There is something incredibly soothing about the sound and the drops it leaves behind on flowers and leaves. I’ve always been sensitive to the smell of coming rain. As a child, my friends thought I was weird for saying, it smells like rain. 😉 I love your quote at the top. Is it okay to Pin it?

    • Sure! Thanks and I think your comment sounds like a great quote for a rainy picture! It was one of the biggest things that made me long for South Florida when we moved. But then I got used to the cold, blustery New England rain. And I like that too 🙂
