I love words. Back when I posted on Opinionated Ant I shared a word of the week, though it was rarely weekly. I relish the weird, wacky, forgotten or those I could never dream of spelling let alone pronouncing.
Right now I have a few dictionaries on my NOOK; The Devil’s Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce and 1811 Vulgar by Sir Frances Grose are just two and I have Johnson’s dictionary saved in my browser.
I won’t promise to share a word every week but here are a few that struck my fancy last month. These were taken from the rather snarky and snort inducing The Devil’s Dictionary. You can get it free on your Kindle, NOOK, or at my very favorite Project Gutenberg.
n. A gift of the gods to certain women, entailing virtue without humility.
n. A minor form of despair, disguised as a virtue.
n. A body of water occupying about two-thirds of a world made for man — who has no gills.
n. A rich thief.
Plus, I found a few modern remakes of The Devil’s Dictionary. Here is one from The Devil’s Dictionary 2.0.
To noisily and simultaneously void one’s spleen, stomach, bladder and bowels.
